Recommended Computer Systems

Service Summary

Information Technology Services (ITS) currently recommends and supports the following computer systems for administrative and general faculty use:  

Windows Desktop Systems

  • Recommended Manufacturer: DELL
  • Energy Star compliant
  • Intel Core i5-7600 (QC) processor or better
  • 8 GB RAM
  • Windows Aero-capable video graphics card*
  • 256GB 2.5inch SATA Class 20 Solid State Drive or better
  • DVD+/-RW drive
  • Ethernet and/or WiFi Adapter for network connectivity
  • Audio output capability (if you need speakers)
  • 19-inch LCD Monitor or better
  • Windows 10 64 bit Professional or Enterprise
  • 3-year hardware warranty or maximum available
  • Do not purchase Microsoft Office products. The university currently has a site license for these products.
*Note: A Windows Aero-capable video graphics card is a graphics card that meets the following requirements:
  • Has at least 256 MB of RAM to support a Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) driver
  • Has a DirectX 9-class graphics processor unit (GPU) that supports Pixel Shader 2.0
  • Supports 32 bits per pixel
  • Passes the Windows Aero acceptance test in the Windows Driver Kit (WDK)

Printing, Scanning, Copying

George Mason University has contracted Canon to be our print services provider. Where possible, please try to utilize the larger multi-function printers located throughout the campus. This will help the university maintain a low carbon foot print, reduce printing costs, and maintain our focus on a green campus. In the event a printer that is not managed by Canon must be used, please follow the guidelines below.

How to Get this Service

Desktop Support will do an assessment when requested. A request can be made through the ITS Support Center. Students should contact Patriot Tech for assistance.

There is no charge for this service.
