Resident Technicians (ResTechs)

Resident Technicians (ResTechs) provide proactive, technical support in the residence halls to help students connect to Mason’s networks and to diagnose and troubleshoot computer problems residents may experience.
Students seeking assistance from a ResTech should provide reliable contact and availability information to facilitate scheduling time with a ResTech.
ResTechs are considered guests and, therefore, need to be escorted while in residential buildings. The student must remain with the ResTech, and if, for any reason, the resident must leave, the ResTech will have to come back at another time.
Due to time limitations, ResTechs do not perform backups, but they do provide instruction on how to do them.
Formatting and Registry Edits
ResTechs are not allowed to format computers, repair corrupted system files, or perform registry edits. Assistance for these types of issues is available from Patriot Computers or other vendors, for a fee.
ResTechs are not allowed to repair hardware problems. When a hardware problem is diagnosed, the ResTech will refer the student to Patriot Computers or a computer repair retailer.
Assistance provided by ResTechs must not violate the university’s honor code; therefore, if a resident seeks help with anything that could be a homework assignment, both the ResTech and the resident must take care that neither is in violation.
How to Get this Service
To request assistance from a ResTech, complete the Resident Technician Request form.
There is no charge for this service.
ResTechs are available Sunday thru Thursday from 5 to 11 p.m. when classes are in session during the fall and spring semesters. They are not available during breaks, reading days, or final exams.

During "Move-In" weekend, ResTechs help new residence students gain access to Mason’s network.
On every consulting visit, ResTechs check systems for up-to-date antivirus software. If none is installed, ResTechs emphasize the importance of antivirus software and help install it during the visit or as soon after as is reasonable. If antivirus software is installed that is not provided by Mason, the ResTech may need to uninstall it and install Mason provided software to meet Student Network Access Protection (SNAP) guidelines.
