Service Summary

Telephone lines and voice mailboxes are provided for faculty, staff, departmental spaces, and student organizations. Each department has an assigned Telecom Coordinator who handles the administration and requesting of telephone services for all members of the department.

New telephone service, moves, and changes must be requested through the department's Telecom Coordinator. Telephones used with the university's system must be purchased from ITS Telecom Admin.

A voice mailbox is programmed upon request and must be set up by the user. Instructions on setting up voice mail is available at

Primary telephone functions:

  • Call forwarding
  • Caller ID
  • Hold
  • Six-way conferencing
  • Transfer

Voice mail functions:

  • Message forwarding to another voice mailbox in the system
  • Personalized greetings: standard and temporary out-of-office
  • Remote retrieval of voice mail messages via telephone or email

Additional telephone services:

  • Telephone conference bridge
  • FindMe, FollowMe
  • Voice mail messages via email

All users of George Mason University telephone services must adhere to University Policy Number 2204: Telephone Use.

How to Get this Service

To request telephone services, contact your department's Telecom Coordinator.

Charges apply for the purchase of telephones and for monthly services.


ITS Telecom Admin is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This service is available 24/7, excluding planned outages, normal maintenance windows, and unavoidable events. Maintenance windows are Sundays from 7 to 11 a.m. but may be extended to 2 p.m., if needed. If maintenance is required outside of these hours, it will be announced on the Planned Outages web page.

ITS Telecom Admin provides in-person training on the use of telephones and voice mail. Online instructions are available at ITS Telecom Admin. A system tutorial is provided when a voice mailbox is set up.

Additional Information

Unified Communications to send copies of voice mail messages to Mason e-mail accounts.

FindMe to transfer calls to a telephone number on or off campus.

Fax Receipt to obtain voice mail notifications and e-mail copies of faxes when transmitted to a configured voice mailbox.

Telephone service requests are generally fulfilled within five business days. There is a blackout period for new requests from mid-August to mid-September each year.
