Residence Hall Network
Available to: Students
Mason’s residence halls have dedicated wired and wireless networks optimized for resident student use. Both the wired and wireless networks require authentication or device registration before network access is allowed.
Authentication can be done automatically with 802.1x or manually, per session, through a captive web portal. For better security and the most feature rich experience at Mason and beyond, Network Engineering recommends everyone configure their devices for 802.1x authentication. Please visit the 802.1x Authentication service catalog entry for more Information. Active Patriot Pass credentials are required for authentication.
As an alternative to authentication, students may register up to five devices for network access. While any device can be registered, Network Engineering recommends this only for devices that cannot use 802.1x authentication, such as wireless printers, robotics systems, and game consoles. Please visit https://mydevices.gmu.edu to register your devices. You will need active Patriot Pass credentials to login and register.
Access to the residence hall network is limited to students who live in Mason’s residence halls.
All users of the residence hall network must adhere to University Policy Number 1301: Responsible Use of Computing.
How to Get this Service
The wired network is available at every active data jack in student rooms and public spaces in the residence halls. Connect to an active jack and open a web browser for captive portal authentication. Registered devices and those configured for 802.1x authentication will authenticate and access the wired network automatically.
The MASON, MASON-SECURE, and eduroam wireless networks are also available throughout the residence halls. Use MASON for registered devices and captive portal authentication. Use MASON-SECURE or eduroam for 802.1x authentication. ITS recommends MASON-SECURE for all Mason students, faculty, and staff. There is no charge for this service.
This service is available 24/7, excluding planned outages, normal maintenance windows, and unavoidable events. Maintenance windows are Sundays from 7 to 11 a.m. but may be extended to 2 p.m., if needed. If maintenance is required outside of these hours, it will be announced on the Planned Outages web page.
Resident Technicians (ResTechs) provide onsite service to students living in the residence halls.
