Public Internet Address on Mason Public Internet and Serve Zone
Also known as: IP Addresses - Server

Information Technology Services (ITS) can assign a Public Internet Address (server IP address) to departments to host servers that provide services or content to computers outside the Mason network.
In addition, research-specific networks, called Serve Zones, are available for departments that wish to control their IP space and will not store sensitive data on their computers.
Requests for a “serve” IP address must be approved by the head of the department and the IT Security Office.
For individual off-campus access to a system, ITS can provide Virtual Private Network access.
This service is limited to Mason faculty, staff, and student organizations.
Server Administrators must maintain their systems in a manner consistent with all IT Security Office requirements and will be routinely scanned for compliance. If a Server Administrator leaves, a new administrator must be assigned, and the ITS must be informed. Systems without a recognized Server Administrator may be removed from the network.
If your computer is not registered as a public server, you will not be able to remotely connect to it from a non-university IP address without a VPN connection.
All users of department Serve Zones and Public Internet Addresses must adhere to:

- University Policy Number 1304: Public Internet Address Policy
How to Get this Service

To request a server IP address, complete a Public Internet Host Request form.
To request a Serve Zone, complete a Serve Zone Request form.
To request a VPN connection, complete a Staff/Faculty VPN Request form.
There is no charge for this service.
This service is available 24/7, excluding planned outages, normal maintenance windows, and unavoidable events. Maintenance windows are Sundays from 7 to 11 a.m. but may be extended to 2 p.m., if needed. If maintenance is required outside of these hours, it will be announced on the Planned Outages web page.
