University Software Licenses

ITS provides the following software through university site licenses. To obtain licensed software for university-owned or leased equipment, complete a Request for Software Installation form. Additional software can be purchased by contacting Patriot Computers at 703-993-4100 or compstor@gmu.edu.

ESRI Products
ESRI is a maker of Geographic Information System (GIS) software. George Mason University has entered into a cooperative agreement with other Commonwealth universities and colleges to license ESRI products, notably, the ARC GIS suite of products. ITS partially funds this license and provides contract administration. Various university departments provide funding for the remaining balance; therefore, use of this license may require a monetary contribution for current and future license terms. ESRI products can only be installed on university-owned or leased equipment.

Maple
Maple is an advanced Mathematics software application. It is available for use through the Academic Labs on a Windows platform, through the university's Central System (mason.gmu.edu) on a UNIX platform, the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL), and can be installed on local workstations and file servers. Maple can only be installed on university-owned or leased equipment.

Matlab 15 and above
Matlab is a Mathematics software application. It is available for use through the Academic Labs on a Windows platform and for use through the university's Central System (mason.gmu.edu) on a UNIX platform and the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL).

Microsoft Campus Agreement
The Microsoft Campus Agreement licenses the following products for use on all university-owned or leased equipment:

  • Microsoft Office (Windows/OS X)
  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Microsoft SharePoint
  • Microsoft Virtual PC
  • Microsoft Visio Pro
  • Microsoft Visual Studio Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Back Office Client Access Licenses (CALS)
  • Microsoft Operating System Downgrade  XP

Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 are also available through the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL).

The Campus Agreement also grants "Work At Home Rights" for Office Suite products and Back Office CALS. "Work At Home Rights" are extended for work-related projects but do not allow for personal use. Media may be purchased at a discounted rate through Patriot Computers.

Microsoft Select Agreement: The Microsoft Select Agreement allows for the purchase of Microsoft products that are not covered under the Campus Agreement. Through the Select Agreement, Microsoft Licenses, Media, and Documentation can be purchased at substantial discounts. The Select Agreement is intended for institutional purchases only and does not extend to personal use.

Licenses, Media, and Documentation must be purchased through specific channels in order to meet the terms of the Campus and Select Agreements. In most instances, a unique keycode will be required to install and run Microsoft products covered under these agreements.

The university distributes Licenses, Media, and Documentation under both agreements through Patriot Computers.

Minitab
Minitab is a Mathematics/Statistics software application available for use through the Academic Labs. Minitab can be purchased through Patriot Computers.

SAS
SAS is a statistical software application. The university has a license for SAS on a Windows platform, and it can be accessed on the university's Central System (mason.gmu.edu) in a UNIX environment and through the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL). SAS can only be installed on university-owned or leased equipment.

SPSS
SPSS is a statistical software application. The university has an agreement with SPSS that allows installation and usage on university-owned or leased equipment. Additionally, SPSS is accessible via the university's Central System (mason.gmu.edu) in a UNIX environment and through the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL).

STATA 12
STATA 12 is a data analysis and statistical software application. It is available for use through the Virtual Computing Lab (VCL).

Symantec Endpoint
The university has an agreement for Symantec Endpoint antivirus software. The agreement allows installation on university-owned or leased workstations and servers and also allows students to load the software on their personal computers. Symantec Endpoint is available on the IT Services Downloads page and from Patriot Computers.
