Microsoft Campus Agreement

Note: On February 1, 2015, a new contract with Microsoft will go into effect, allowing faculty and staff access to some of the latest and most popular Microsoft computer software products. The contract terms for many products remain the same as with the previous contract. However, there is a change that affects Visual Studio users. The terms of the new licensing agreement state that Mason users who use Visual Studio must use it exclusively for “teaching and learning.” As a result, users of any Visual Studio version installed on a Mason-owned computer that do not meet the new requirement will need to purchase a copy of Visual Studio and uninstall the previous copy to be in compliance with the new agreement by the above date.

The Microsoft Campus Agreement licenses the following products for use on all university-owned or leased equipment:

  • Microsoft Office (Windows/OS X)
  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Microsoft SharePoint
  • Microsoft Virtual PC
  • Microsoft Visio Pro
  • Microsoft Back Office Client Access Licenses (CALS)

The Campus Agreement also grants "Work At Home Rights" for Office Suite products and Back Office CALS. "Work At Home Rights" are extended for work-related projects but do not allow for personal use. Media may be purchased at a discounted rate through Patriot Computers.

Microsoft Select Agreement: The Microsoft Select Agreement allows for the purchase of Microsoft products that are not covered under the Campus Agreement. Through the Select Agreement, Microsoft Licenses, Media, and Documentation can be purchased at substantial discounts. The Select Agreement is intended for institutional purchases only and does not extend to personal use.

Licenses, Media, and Documentation must be purchased through specific channels in order to meet the terms of the Campus and Select Agreements. In most instances, a unique keycode will be required to install and run Microsoft products covered under these agreements.

The university distributes Licenses, Media, and Documentation under both agreements through Patriot Computers.
